Housing Families First with Region 7

On August 10th, the managers of the Mighty Region 7 with the help from Ron Halchishak, Paul Agrillo, and Phillip Vetter, converged on the Hillard House in Richmond, VA to participate in a Regional Day of Service. Together, the team helped renovate the home to assist Housing Families First (HFF) with a maintenance reset of the building. HFF is the only homeless shelter in Virginia that keeps families together while they suffer through hardship. $.86 cents of every donated dollar goes to improving the lives of the residents and as a result, few resources are allocated to cleaning and maintenance.

The managers of Region 7 painted, waxed and buffed all the floors, and sorted hundreds of donated articles of clothing. A small detail led by Elizabeth Bowman and Eddie Frye also completely reorganized the 400’ square foot basement; much to the delight of the staff at Housing Families First. Thanks to the efforts from the team, HFF will be able to allocate more resources to helping the guests of the house.

Phil Vetter and Annie McDonald converted the donations closet into an Old Navy store with color coordination while sorting by size, clothing type, and appearance. Jeff Miles and Paul Agrillo worked the buffer and shined the floors bright enough for some guests to see their reflections. Scott MacIlvaine and David Pawuk conducted a deep clean of the kitchen. Ron Halchishak, Chad Devries, and Chris Fulford led the painting charge while Bernie Tuthill and Andrew Haynes led the way with the small brushes. Together, it took a total team effort to completely renovate the building.

Without a doubt, the highlight of the event occurred when Annie, Vince Matal, and Bob Farrell helped a mom with three children check out of their house and move into their own home. The joy on the children’s faces made the entire day of service seem small. It’s easy for us to take the simple things of life for granted. Annie said it best, “I needed this day. It’s easy to lose sight of the simple things but this helped reset my view on life.”

It’s amazing that one of MM’s Core Values is community service. Few companies allow and encourage employees to make a difference in the community. Together, we as a MM family, are good because we make our communities great.
