Steve Carlson stood defeated, busted storage container lock in hand, telling the local media about tens of thousands of dollars in tools and equipment stolen from his California yard last week. Another report said $7,000 in tools was ripped off from a Tulsa, Okla. non-profit jobsite, the local TV news showing two victimized storage containers with a standard four-bar locking system. In Waimea, Hawaii, thieves stole 11 chain saws and other tree service equipment from a storage container just off the main highway. All within the past few weeks. Dozens if not hundreds of media reports of busted portable storage containers and subsequent property theft light up Google News every week.
Brian Glover has a similar story. He was dismayed upon showing up for work recently and finding half a dozen of his construction site’s storage containers broken into. Bars and locks were cut by thieves who made off with valuables from Boro Construction, a company specializing in high-end projects such as public schools and state buildings.
There was however one piece of solace for Mr Glover that day; his company’s Mobile Mini portable storage container’s Tri-Cam Locking System was scuffed but impenetrable. The crooks attempted to bust it up, failed and moved on to other non-Mobile Mini units, saving Boro Construction up to six figures worth of valuables including high-dollar tools and copper wire stored in the Mobile Mini unit. After the event, Mr Glover said “I’m a firm believer in Mobile Mini. These containers are going to stay with me on many projects in the future.”
National Equipment Register (NER) estimates the value of construction equipment stolen each year is between $300M to $1B. Then there’s the cost of renting equipment until permanent replacements are purchased; newly-inflated insurance premiums and the time it takes to file police reports and back-and-forth with insurance adjusters.
Bryan Ladrech of Mobile Mini’s Reno, Nev. branch relays the following story: “A few weeks back six job sites were targeted by thieves here in the Reno area. Once again, our Tri-Cam Locking System held strong during the burglars’ attempts to access the units. The bad guys even went so far as to use a forklift to try and break down the doors. In our customer’s own words, ‘This is why I rent from Mobile Mini!’”
According to Mobile Mini Division Fleet Manager Jon Keating, the Tri-Cam Locking System’s genesis was many years ago when a retail customer needed containers behind their locations to securely store extra inventory. Criminals would keep breaking into competitor’s portable storage containers. Mobile Mini needed a better way. “First, we developed a drop lock welded on the bottom of the container. Then we added a saddle over the lock making it hard for thieves to drill,” Keating explained. “We kept adding features and we needed a lock we could patent at home and overseas. The Tri-Cam Locking System came to fruition over months of experimentation and field testing. And when combined with our hockey puck lock, well now you have to breach both locking systems for a thief to access one of our containers. Good luck.”
Reports from the field keep coming in. Bullets, drills, hacksaws, forklifts. Criminals will and have tried just about everything to penetrate Mobile Mini’s bank vault-secure containers. Nearly every time when there’s an attempted break-in, relieved customers share their photos and stories of Mobile Mini-thwarted break-ins.
In addition to Mobile Mini’s industry-leading security, customer John Burton of Missouri’s Vee-Jay Cement says what puts Mobile Mini even further over the top are “a huge selection of prices and units and the phone representatives know what they’re talking about. Not to mention the nice delivery trucks to go along with the quality of the containers. Everything about our experiences with Mobile Mini is very professional Thank you for everything.”
Mobile Mini Senior VP of Sales and Marketing Chris Anderson may have summed it up best: “Our patented Tri-Cam Locking System and tough all-steel secure storage units keep your valuables the safest from thieves in even the most difficult locations. Tri-Cam’s interlocking bars secure the top, bottom and sides from the inside. That’s vault-like security none of our competitors can match. Mobile Mini is the closest thing you can get to a guarantee your possessions will stay safe and secure.”
